SmartTexts

A SmartText is a piece of text you reuse: a signature, a standard reply, an address, an explanatory paragraph. You write it once; after that, all of Modula's tools insert it in a few keystrokes, on any website.

Title, content, keyword Starter

Three fields are enough to get started:

FieldRole
TitleThe name you find it under in menus and search. Required.
ContentThe inserted text. It accepts formatting and dynamic fields. Required.
Expander keywordWhat you type to insert it with the Expander, for example !sig. Optional: without a keyword, the SmartText is still available from all the other tools.
Example

Title “Acknowledgement”, content “Hello, we have received your request and will get back to you within 48 hours.”, keyword !ack.

How to
  1. Open the Options (Settings button in the icon menu), SmartTexts tab.
  2. Click + New SmartText.
  3. Fill in the title, the content and, if you like, the keyword, then Save.
Good to know

Keep your SmartTexts short and combinable: a separate opening line, signature and closing line get used far more often than a complete, fixed email.

Category and favourite Basic

The Category files the SmartText away: it groups items in the RightClick and SelAction menus, and filters the lists. Pick an existing category, or type a new name — Modula asks for confirmation before creating it. See Categories.

Tick ★ Favorite for text you use all the time: it moves to the top of every list and appears in the Overbar.

Formatting follows the field Basic

A SmartText's bold, headings or lists are kept when you insert it into an editor that accepts them — Gmail, Outlook on the web, Notion. In a plain field (a form, a search bar), the same SmartText arrives as clean plain text: lists keep their dashes or numbers.

See Formatting.

With no active field, the text is copied Basic

If no input field has the cursor when you choose a SmartText — from the Sidebar, for example — Modula doesn't insert it anywhere: it copies it to the clipboard, and a message tells you so. Then paste it wherever you want with Ctrl+V.

Copying instead of inserting Advanced

Some text isn't meant to be inserted into a web page but pasted elsewhere: accounting software, a terminal, a desktop application. For such text, choose copying: the SmartText always goes to the clipboard, never into the page.

How to
  1. Open the SmartText in the editor.
  2. Tick Copy only, then save.
Good to know

A copy-only SmartText that contains the {{selection}} field becomes a SmartClip: it transforms the text you selected.

Replacing the whole field Advanced

Normally, a SmartText is inserted at the cursor, leaving the rest untouched. With Replace all existing text, it replaces the field's entire content.

Example

Every day Camille fills in the same “Comment” field of an in-house tool, which keeps the previous day's note. Her “Today's note” SmartText is set to replace all the text: the old note disappears and the new one takes its place.
