Categories

A category files away your SmartTexts and SmartMails. It organises the RightClick and SelAction menus, filters the lists, and can carry an icon and a list of sites. The Categories page manages them all.

Filing your items Basic

Each item has at most one category, chosen in the editor. The same category can contain SmartTexts and SmartMails.

Good to know

Start with a few broad categories — Sales, Support, Personal — rather than thirty precise ones. Search does the rest.

A category's icon Advanced

An icon (an emoji) identifies the category everywhere: RightClick submenus, SelAction, the category column, list badges, previews. Without an icon, 📁 stands in.

The ▾ button to the right of the field opens the picker: a selection of common icons, then all emojis by group, and a search (in English: money, mail, phone…). You can also paste an emoji, or use the system emoji keyboard (Windows+., or Ctrl+⌘+Space on Mac).

The Categories page Advanced

The Options' Categories tab shows one card per category: icon, name, number of SmartTexts and SmartMails, allowed sites. When you arrive, the first category is open in its detail panel on the right; click another card to open it.

The detail panel lets you:

  • change the icon, name and sites, then Save (Undo changes goes back);
  • see the category's items, and See all → in the list;
  • create an item already filed in it: + New SmartText, + New SmartMail;
  • Export, ⇲ Merge… or delete the category.
Good to know

If you leave a modified panel without saving, Modula asks: Discard, Back to the category or Save.

Renaming, deleting Advanced

  • Renaming a category also renames all its items, in a single operation.
  • Deleting a category deletes no items: you choose which category to move them to, or “No category”.

Both operations can be undone from the History tab.

Merging Advanced

⇲ Merge… moves the items of one or more categories into another, with a summary before confirming. The target category keeps its icon and sites; the others disappear.

Example

Camille has “Support”, “After-sales” and “Customer service”, which mean the same thing. She merges the last two into “Support”.

Search and filters Advanced

Next to the search field, three filters, with their count: Empty (no items), With sites (limited to certain sites) and No icon.

The category order, the same everywhere Advanced

At the top right of the page, three orders:

OrderPrinciple
Customthe one you choose by dragging the cards
A→Zalphabetical
By iconcategories with the same icon follow one another, in alphabetical order

The chosen order is used everywhere: the RightClick menu, SelAction, the category column, the search's category strip. “No category” always comes last.

To choose your own order, grab a card anywhere and drag it: the order switches to Custom.

Moving from the keyboard Expert

A focused card moves with Alt+↑ and Alt+↓. Drag and drop is suspended during a search, a filter, or in Organize mode.

Renaming to an existing name Expert

Renaming “After-sales” to “Support”, when “Support” exists, merges the two: the items of “After-sales” move to “Support”, which keeps its icon and sites.

Organising categories Expert

The ☑ Organize button puts a box on each card: tick several categories to give them the same icon or the same sites, merge them or delete them in one go.

Almost identical names, empty categories Expert

  • When two categories differ only by capitals or accents (“Support” and “support”), a banner flags it at the top of the page. Merge them, or ignore the warning if it's intentional.
  • A category whose last item has gone stays saved, with its icon and sites. It appears in no menu as long as it is empty. The Delete the N empty categories link removes them all, after a confirmation that names them.

Exporting a category Advanced

The detail panel's Export button downloads a file with only that category's items: handy for passing your support templates to a colleague, who will import them into their Modula.

Good to know

The file contains the texts, not the category's settings (icon, sites).

A category's allowed sites Expert Pro

In the detail panel, the list of allowed sites limits the category to those sites: its SmartTexts and SmartMails appear only there, in all the tools. One site per line; empty, the category is offered everywhere.

Example

The “Support” category is limited to support.example.com: its forty replies no longer clutter the menus when Camille writes to her family.
