SmartMails

Where a SmartText fills in a field, a SmartMail prepares a whole message: recipients, copy, subject and body. One click, and your email program opens with everything already filled in.

Turning SmartMails on Basic

SmartMails are turned off at install. Once turned on, the SmartMail tab appears in the Options, and SmartMails join the Sidebar, the Launcher and RightClick.

How to
  1. Open the Options, then Settings → Toolbox.
  2. Above the tool tabs, turn on SmartMails.

Creating a SmartMail Basic

FieldContent
ToOne or more addresses, separated by commas. Leave it empty if the recipient changes every time.
CcThe addresses in copy, same rule.
SubjectThe email's subject.
ContentThe body of the message, as plain text.
How to
  1. Options, SmartMail tab, + New SmartMail button.
  2. Fill in the title, recipients, subject and body, then Save.

Opening the ready-made email Basic

Choose a SmartMail in the Sidebar, the Launcher, RightClick or the SelAction: Modula opens your email program — Outlook, Thunderbird, Mail, or Gmail if it handles email links — with a new message already addressed, with its subject and body. Read it over, send.

Example

The “Leave request” SmartMail is addressed to HR, subject “Leave request”, body ready. Camille picks it in the Sidebar: the message opens, all she has left to do is give the dates.

Good to know

The message goes through a mailto: link, the standard mechanism of every browser: it carries neither formatting nor attachments, and its length is limited. See Troubleshooting if the program doesn't open.

Fields in the recipient, subject and body Advanced

Dynamic fields work everywhere in a SmartMail: in the body, but also in To, Cc and Subject. Before opening the email, Modula shows the insertion form.

Example

Subject “Your order {{text:Order number}}”, recipient {{selection}}. Camille selects the customer's address in a ticket, triggers the SmartMail, types the number: the email opens addressed to the customer, with the number in the subject.

In a SmartMail, the field buttons are below the title; they act on the last field you clicked (recipient, copy, subject or body).

Creating a SmartMail from an email link on a page Advanced

A website shows a “Write to us” link that opens a pre-addressed email? Grab it as a SmartMail: Modula spreads the address, copy, subject and body into the right fields.

How to
  1. Right-click the link.
  2. In the Modula menu, choose 📧 Create a SmartMail from this mailto link.
  3. Check the fields in the editor that opens, give it a title, save.

Creating a SmartMail from a selection Advanced

Select some text on a page, right-click, then + Add selection as SmartMail in the Modula menu: the editor opens with the selection as the email body.

A long or formatted email Advanced

For a long body, with bold or lists, combine the two: open the email with a SmartMail (address and subject), then fill in the body with a SmartText inserted directly into your webmail's compose window. The formatting is kept there.
