Modula Modula documentation

Getting started

Installation and introduction

Modula installs from the Chrome Web Store, with no account and no sign-up. A short introduction welcomes you, then you have 14 days to try everything.

A 14-day trial, everything included Starter

As soon as Modula is installed, a 14-day trial starts: every feature, including those of the Pro plan, is available. No credit card is required.

When the trial ends, Modula switches to the Free plan: your content stays, but you can no longer create more than 20 SmartTexts and 5 SmartMails, and the Pro features close. See Plan & Licence.

Good to know

The days left are shown in the icon menu. Use the trial to import your text from another tool: the import wizard is a Pro feature.

The introduction Starter

On first install, a tab opens and asks how you want to start:

ChoiceWhat follows
I'm coming from another toolYou pick your tool (Text Blaze, TextExpander, Espanso…); Modula shows you how to export your text from it, then takes you to the import wizard.
I'm new to ModulaA short demonstration, then you create your first SmartText — a signature, keyword !signature — and try it right away.

Both paths end the same way: choosing your tools, then a final screen that reminds you of the trial and offers the documentation.

Good to know

You can leave the introduction at any time with Skip the introduction. Nothing is lost: it can be replayed from the Options.

The installed examples Starter

On the “I'm new to Modula” path, a few examples are added to your library so the tools have something to show: a follow-up, a thank-you and, if you turn on SmartMails, an email template.

They carry a demo badge in the Sidebar and the Launcher, and don't count towards the Free plan limits. As soon as you edit an example, it becomes an ordinary SmartText: the badge disappears and it counts like the others.

Deleting the examples Basic

All the examples are in the Modula Demo category. To get rid of them in one go:

How to
  1. Open the Options, SmartTexts tab.
  2. Click ☑ Organize, then tick the box in front of the Modula Demo category in the left-hand column.
  3. Click Delete and confirm. The examples spend 30 days in the bin.
Good to know

If you turned on SmartMails, do the same in the SmartMail tab for the sample email template.

Choosing your tools during the introduction Starter

Before the introduction ends, a screen presents Modula's tools, each with a switch: Expander, RightClick, Sidebar, Launcher, Overbar, and SmartMails. Turn on what suits you — everything can be changed later in Settings → Toolbox.

Example

Camille writes a lot of emails. She turns on SmartMails during the introduction: a sample email template appears in her library, ready to adapt.

See All the tools to choose.

Replaying the introduction Basic

The introduction can be replayed at any time. If you had followed it, your first SmartText is updated rather than duplicated, and the examples are not installed again.

How to
  1. Open the Options, Documentation tab: you land on its home page.
  2. At the bottom of the home page, About section, click ▶ Replay the introduction.

The what's new page Basic

After an update that brings new features, Modula opens a page presenting them, once. It also recalls the new features of earlier versions: if you skipped a version, you miss nothing. A simple bug fix does not reopen it.

How to
  1. To see it again: Options, Documentation tab, home page, About section.
  2. Click 🎁 See what's new again.
